Community Service

Community Service has always been a part of the St. Stephen’s experience. St. Stephen, the first Deacon of the Church, was charged with helping the needy. Thus, in August 2001 the School and Home Association formed a Community Service Committee to provide emphasis and additional opportunity for service. As members of the St. Stephen’s community, we all became "the helping hands of St. Stephen" in the world today.

Our Community Service program starts when we are in PK. During the early years we concentrate on learning about the needs of others. As we get older, we start growing into service with others. Finally, in our last three years at the school we take self-directed action in servicing others.

Each of our projects follows consists of four main areas, planning, action, reflection and acknowledgement. If we follow a plan we have a more successful project. As we carry out our plan we also keep in mind that all projects provide us with a learning opportunity. After the project is over we spend time reflecting on what happened and examining our thoughts and feelings as well as those of our teachers and parents.

Each year St. Stephen's holds a Family Community Service Day.  Students in PK-SK help clean up the school campus, while students in Grade 1 through 6 participate in Hands On Miami, a United Way program that sponsors various community service projects, such as painting the homes of disabled senior citizens, painting murals in schools, landscaping public areas, or cleaning up beaches and parks.  This year St. Stephen's students will help clean up Crandon Park on Key Biscayne.
