Summer Reading Lists

Yellow dog reads - (Dogs)

Required Reading
Students who are entering Junior K - Grade 6 have required summer reading.

Junior Kindergarten
Students entering Junior K must read the nonfiction science book, The Butterfly by Anna Milbourne & Cathy Shimmen.  Students must also complete this Science Book Report Form (Adobe Acrobat Reader required)

Senior Kindergarten
Students entering Senior K must read the following Level A Yellow Umbrella Books (Capstone Press) nonfiction science books and complete this Science Book Report Form (Adobe Acrobat Reader required).
   1.  Mammals by Susan Ring
   2.  The Ocean by Susan Ring

Grade 1
Students entering Grade 1 must read the following nonfiction science books and complete this Science Book Report Form (Adobe Acrobat Reader required).

   1.  Frogs by Sarah Courtauld
   2.  Sea Turtles by Martha E. H. Rustad

Grade 2
Students entering Grade 2 must complete any 3 chapter books of their choice and complete the Book Report Form.  In addition, students must
read the following nonfiction science books and complete this Science Book Report Form (Adobe Acrobat Reader required).
   1.  Crab Moon by Ruth Horowitz
   2.  Break Out at the Bug Lab by Ruth Horowitz

Grade 3
Students entering Grade 3 must read the following:
   1. Ramona Quimby, Age 8  by Beverly Cleary
 
 2. Because of Winn Dixie by Kate DiCamillo
   3. The Tale of Desperaux by Kate DiCamillo

In addition,
 students must read the following nonfiction science book and complete this Science Book Report Form (Adobe Acrobat Reader required).
   1.  Deep in the Swamp by Donna M. Bateman

Grade 4
Students entering Grade 4 must read the following:
  1. The Missing Gator of Gumbo Limbo by Jean Craighead George
  2. Sideways Stories from Wayside School  by Louis Sachar
  3. for the girls: Beezus and Ramona by Beverly Cleary
  4. for the boys: Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing by Judy Blume

Grade 5
Students entering Grade 5 must read the following:
  1. Old Yeller  by Fred Gipson
 
2. Homeless Bird
by Gloria Whelan
  3.
Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH by Robert C. O’Brien

Grade 6
Students entering Grade 6 must read the following:
  1. The Cay by Theodore Taylor
  2. D’Aulaires’ Book of Greek Myths
  
  3.
Stranded by Ben Mikaelsen

Recommended Reading
