Each year the Fifth Grade reads My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George. This is a story about a boy who survives in the wilderness of upstate New York. He finds a peregrin falcon and teaches the falcon to hunt for food for both of them. After reading the book, the Fifth Grade adopted a peregrin falcon from the Miami Museum of Science. Their Wildlife Center has a rehabilitation program dedicated to the ecological research, rehabilitation, and release of injured birds of prey. Eric who works with the birds of prey brought two owls, a hawk and a bald eagle for the classes to see up close.
