The Third
Grade studies "The Old King" by Georges Rouault (Roo-oh,
1871-1958). Rouault was an apprentice for a stained
glass maker at the age of fourteen. This
apprenticeship later had an influence in his painting.
Rouault used heavy black outlines in his paintings
reminiscent of the stained glass windows he created.
The Third Graders painted their "Royal Portraits" in a
similar manner.
