Henri Rousseau (French), Surprised, Storm in the Forest
Henri Rousseau was born on May 21, 1844 and died on
September 2, 1910. He was a French Post-Impressionist
painter. His best known paintings depict jungle scenes. An
interesting note is that he never left France or saw a
jungle. His inspiration came from illustrated books and the
botanical gardens in Paris. He painted in layers. The
second grade students also had to paint in layers.
The students were able to
distinguish the ways in which overlapping forms create
foreground,
middleground and background.
