History of the School

In September 1958, St. Stephen’s Episcopal Day School held its first classes, the culmination of an idea started about a year earlier by some of the parents who were members of St. Stephen’s Parish and enthusiastically endorsed by Father Copeland, the then Rector.

Any Parish-supported activity in the Episcopal Church requires approval of the Vestry. The approval for the Day School was secured with the understanding that certain guidelines set by St. Stephen’s Vestry would be followed. This would be a Christian school owned and operated by the Parish and it would be a part of the outreach program of the Parish. The purpose of the school would be to offer quality education in a Christian atmosphere to children in the community, and the Vestry would be assisted in the operation of the school by an advisory board to be known as the Board of Trustees. Officers of the Vestry would automatically be members of the Board, and parents would also have representation. This plan was adopted and is still the basis on which our school operates.

Financial support of the school by the Vestry is no longer necessary, and the school is considered a self-supporting arm of the Parish. There is no remuneration to the Parish by the school since the Parish considers the school a valuable part of its outreach program.
